FOUNDER DIRECTORS & FACULTY

Apurva Shah
Dr Apurva Shah, the Founder Director of Antarnad, is responsible for reviving the psychoanalytic movement in Gujarat. After medical training in Ahmedabad, completed the residency training in General Adult Psychiatry at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, followed by fellowship training in Consult-Liaison Psychiatry at the Montefiore Medical Center and in Child & Adolescent Psychiatry at the Bronx Childrens� Psychiatric Center, New York. Was a candidate at the New York Psychoanalytic Institute for two years, and trained in psychoanalytic psychotherapy and practiced for five years, also completed a two-year programme in Systemic Family Therapy from the Urban Family Institute, New York. Has presented several papers at local, national and international conferences on psychotherapy across cultures and on addressing violence against women in family therapy, and authored a chapter on �Psychoanalysis and Long-term Dynamic Therapy� in the Textbook of Psychiatry for South Asia. Back in India in 1996, his advocacy of psychoanalysis finally led to the creation of Antarnad Foundation. After seeing it through the early years, returned to Palmdale, USA, where he currently practices and runs a Freud Study Group, and is associated with the New Center for Psychoanalysis, Santa Monica. He visits Antarnad once a year for a fortnight, when he conducts lectures and seminars on psychoanalysis and psychotherapy. Dr Apurva Shah used to play cricket, now he just watches it, cooks once a year - excellent Italian fare, and he tries to sing.

V D Shah
One of the pioneers of Psychiatry in Gujarat, retired as Professor and Head of the Department of Psychiatry, NHLM Medical College and VS Hospital, Ahmedabad. He has been the President of the West Zone Indian Psychiatric Society and the Gujarat Psychiatric Society. He is a practicing psychiatrist and teaches psychiatric clinicals to the students of the clinical track students of the graduate programme in psychoanalytic psychotherapy, and devotes his time to bridge, the other passion in his life.


RESIDENT FACULTY

Darshan Shah
Director, Antarnad Foundation and Head, Psychotherapy Clinic

Dr Darshan Shah is a Director of the Antarnad Foundation and the Head of the Psychotherapy Clinic, and a faculty at the Institute of Psychotherapy. An MD in Psychiatry from NHLM Medical College and VS Hospital, Ahmedabad, and graduate of the clinical programme of the Institute of Psychotherapy, Antarnad, he is research coordinator for Neurology and Psychopharmacology at the Neurology Centre, Ahmedabad.

Mamta Shah
Faculty and Head, Institute of Psychotherapy & Psychological Testing Unit

Dr Mamta Shah is the Head of the Psychological Testing Unit, a faculty at the Institute of Psychotherapy and course coordinator of the psychological testing programmes. A PhD in Clinical Psychology with graduate training in psychoanalytic psychotherapy and additional qualifications in psychological testing and autism, worked with the Harrow Learning Disability Team in London for two years providing clinical, training and research services. A global citizen, she has lived in Malaysia, Singapore, USA, UK and North India, but never in the Southern Indian subcontinent and the South American continent which she makes up for by pursuing her interests in bharatnatyam and salsa.


ADJUNCT FACULTY

Sailesh Kapadia
A Training and Control Psychoanalyst, is a member of the International Psychoanalytical Association, the Indian Psychoanalytic Society and the Australian Psychoanalytical Society, and senior faculty at the Psychoanalytic Therapy and Research Centre, Mumbai. He has published research papers in both Indian and international peer-reviewed psychoanalytic journals. As an adjunct faculty, he supervises clinical trainees and lectures on Klienian Psychoanalysis at the Institute of Psychotherapy over two days every month. Among his other interests are the application of psychoanalysis to art and cinema, and Mr Kapadia is a trained Hindustani vocalist and plays the sitar.

Maitreya Parikh
MD in Psychiatry from NHLM Medical College and VS Hospital, Ahmedabad, Dr Parikh topped the university in both the DPM and MD exams. One of the key members in laying the groundwork for founding Antarnad, he teaches psychiatric diagnostics to clinical students of IOP. He is also the founder member of the Gujarat Institute of Psychological Science. A university level athlete and sportsman, Dr Parikh is a polyglot with a passion for psychology and psychiatry.


VISITING FACULTY

Anurag Mishra
An alumni of IOP, Antarnad Foundation, obtained his MD in Psychiatry from BJ Medical College and Civil Hospital, Ahmedabad. Currently a Consultant Psychiatrist with Max Healthcare, New Delhi, founded and heads the Psychoanalysis Unit within its Psychiatric Department, is a faculty at the Centre for Psychoanalytic Studies, Delhi University, visiting faculty at Lady Shriram College, and a member and India representative of the IPSO section of the International Psychoanalytic Association. A wine and cigar enthusiast, gets high on the poetry of Jorge Luis Borges when no such pharmaceutical high is at hand.

Anurag Shrivastav
An Associate Professor of Psychiatry, Deccan College of Medical Sciences, Hyderabad, where he also runs a Freud Study Group, has been a consultant psychiatrist and practicing psychoanalytic psychotherapist for nearly a decade. A graduate of the clinical programme of the Institute of Psychotherapy, Antarnad, he got his MD in Psychiatry from NHLM Medical College and VS Hospital, Ahmedabad. Is presently the Vice President of the Hyderabad Psychiatric Society, Executive Member of the Indian Psychiatric Society AP Chapter, and a father of two little daughters - hence too busy to have any other interests.

Jhuma Basak
A Training Psychoanalyst, has a Masters in Comparative Literature from Jadavpur University, Kolkata, and is a member of the International Psychoanalytical Association, the Indian Psychoanalytic Society and the Japan Psychoanalytical Society. She is currently a Consultant Psychoanalyst at Max Health Care, New Delhi, and visiting faculty at the Centre for Psychoanalytic Studies, Delhi University. She has been a visiting professor at the Centre for Clinical Psychology and Human Development, Kyushu University, Japan, and earlier practised as a psychoanalyst at the Calcutta Psychoanalytic Therapeutic Centre. She has been the assistant editor of Samiksa, the journal of the Indian Psychoanalytic Society, and has presented papers in international psychoanalytic conferences. Her psychoanalytic papers have been translated into Japanese, German and Hungarian. In her pre-analytic days, she wrote for the Seagull Theatre Quarterly, was the Classical and Contemporary Dance reviewer for the Telegraph, and her collection of poems has been published in Passages, a literary journal from Italy. A danseuse, she has been on performing tours to China, Philippines, Cuba, Colombia, Peru, Norway, Indonesia, Portugal and the UK, and has choreographed for several national and international theatre productions.
