GRADUATE PROGRAMME IN PSYCHOANALYTIC PSYCHOTHERAPY
Three-Year Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Track
One/Two-Year Non-Clinical Track

About the Course

The three-year Graduate Programme in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy is the flagship programme of the Institute of Psychotherapy and has a tripartite structure of Theory, Clinical Work and Personal Therapy. Anyone who wishes to be certified as a psychoanalytic psychotherapist by the Institute has to do the three year course work in Psychoanalytic Theory, be in Personal Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy with a psychotherapist assigned by the Institute, and in the Clinical Series do the necessary course work which involves practical training and psychotherapy with patients under supervision. Only those students who have been in personal therapy for a reasonable period of time are allowed to take clinical cases following feedback from the personal psychotherapist and the academic committee. MD Psychiatry residents would be exempted from some of the clinical course work.

The Institute also offers a Non-Clinical track that would be of interest to anyone with curiosity about human nature and ones own self. The candidates enrolled for this track will get to attend all the lectures and seminars except those that involve clinical work. Thus, they would be exempted from both personal therapy and the clinical series [except for some of the lectures on psychotherapeutic practice].

Course Content

The Graduate Programme involves Theoretical Coursework, Clinical Work and Personal Analysis. The Theory is organized into following three concurrently running modules:
Psychoanalytic Theory Series
Clinical Series
Foundations, Research and Integration Series

Psychoanalytic Theory Series
The psychoanalytic theory module gives the students a thorough grounding in classical and contemporary psychoanalytic theory. The first year syllabus focuses on the exposition of classical psychoanalytic theory and the historical development of these ideas. The subsequent years covers the later developments in the field of psychoanalysis under different schools, and students are given an integrated view of the field so that they can draw upon these ideas in their clinical practice.

Clinical Series
The first year clinical module begins with classes on psychiatric diagnostics and hands-on experience in Psychiatric Interviewing, Mental Status Examination, and Diagnosis in a psychiatric clinic, followed by introductory lectures on psychoanalytic psychotherapy. From the second year onwards there are advanced lectures on the practice and technique of psychoanalytic psychotherapy. Only those students who have already been in therapy for a reasonable period of time are allowed to take in patients for psychotherapy under supervision. This is done strictly on the basis of the feedback obtained from the academic committee that includes the personal psychotherapist of the student.

Foundations, Research and Integration Series
The focus of this module is on the foundations of psychoanalysis for which the necessary grounding in philosophy [assuming the student has no exposure] and neurobiology [assuming the student has elementary knowledge of biology] is provided. This prepares the student to take the more advanced courses in the conceptual foundations of research and research strategies in psychoanalysis. The objective of this module is to equip the student with critical research skills, to develop an interdisciplinary and integrated perspective of psychoanalysis, cognitive science and biology, and to enable those seriously inclined to make an informed choice of methods in their own research pursuits in psychoanalysis. Among the objectives of this series is the idea of developing a pool of potential researches who would actively participate in psychoanalytic research that IOP intends to undertake within the next couple of years. Thus, this course would be of great help to those planning to do their MPhil or PhD.

Personal Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy
Personal psychotherapy is mandatory for the students in the clinical track and it has a two-fold purpose it is the best way a student can understand and learn the psychoanalytic therapeutic process, and it helps resolve the students own personal issues that invariably come in the way of his or her own clinical work with patients. If it is found after the three-year period that there are too many unresolved psychological issues that might come in the way of the students independent clinical work, then he or she is offered a non-clinical track certification by the Institute.

Pedagogy

The students are given a thorough grounding in psychoanalytic theory. This involves reading the psychoanalytic pioneers in the original. Extensive use is made of explicatory papers from peer-reviewed journals, published case studies, and selections from books by psychoanalysts, and other clinical examples. Hence, the command of English expected of the student is much higher than that required for a normal university course. The clinical cases would also be supplemented by psychoanalysis of movies [Psychoanalytic Movie Club], selections from fiction, and contemporary issues of society. While some of the topics are covered in regular lectures, a few would be covered in intensive vertical days and seminars conducted from time to time. Besides the didactic classes, students are expected to present papers in the classroom from time to time, which allows for a more active learning on part of the student.

IOP has a well-stocked library of books on psychoanalysis and psychotherapy, psychoanalytic journals, audio and video cassettes, and CD-Roms.

Evaluation and Certification Criteria

Besides the coursework, the student will be evaluated on demonstrated analytic competence and maturity in supervised clinical work and he/she should have achieved the capacity for independent psychotherapeutic work before certification can be awarded.

80% attendance
Ongoing classroom assessment and annual assessments
Successful completion of the final assignment involving independent library work
Completion of personal psychotherapy
Successful termination of a minimum of two psychotherapy cases under supervision

Eligibility and Admission Criteria

Eligibility:
Clinical Track
MA Psychology, MSW, MD Psychiatry Residents, and those enrolled in MA Psychology or Final Year BA Psychology Programmes.

Graduates in any discipline.

Admission: Suitability as evidenced in the Application Form
Written Test [based on the reading material to be provided on application]
Interview

The screening process assesses both the aptitude and potential of the prospective students, and hence past academic performance would not be a significant factor. But the students are expected to have a good command of English, fluency in spoken English is not as important as excellence in reading comprehension. Since life experience and the emotional maturity that comes from it is an essential quality the Institute is looking for, mature candidates and those considering a mid-life entry into or change of profession, even those who completed their formal education years back, are strongly advised to apply; the Institute will give you ample opportunity to regain your academic touch.

Time Commitment

Duration: Three years plus an optional one year for clinical practice and advanced seminars for Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy.

Students in the clinical track will have to spare about four to five hours per week for personal analysis, in addition to some extra hours during the first year for clinical training in psychiatric clinics and hospitals. From the second year onwards the number of hours to be devoted at the Institute increases substantially with the clinical work and supervisions.

Career Prospects and Recognition

The Institute of Psychotherapy is not affiliated to any formal University set-up, but the contemporary curriculum and the rigorous training provided helps the student acquire the necessary professional skills to set-up a private practice or to take up work in a psychiatric set-up, hospital or a mental health organization. The students in the Clinical Track, on fulfilling the necessary internal criteria, are recommended by the Institute to be made the affiliates of the Indian Psychoanalytic Society, the Indian Chapter of the International Psychoanalytical Association. The experience at the Institute gives the student intensive exposure to the field of psychoanalysis for him/her to seriously consider working towards full-fledged membership of the International Psychoanalytical Association and Indian Psychoanalytic Society to become a psychoanalyst. Thus, IOP also serves as a feeder institute for the psychoanalytic movement within the country. Since there is no chartered body within the country that issues certification for psychotherapy, the students would be free to practice psychotherapy with the professional skills acquired here. Yet the Institute expects its clinical students to complete their Masters in Psychology before they graduate, and encourages those who have already done their Masters to enroll for their PhD. Though the certification of the Institute of Psychotherapy is not recognized by any University within the country for higher studies, the certificates and transcripts issued are taken seriously by the admission committees of Western Universities. Thus, the courses of the Institute definitely add value to anyone aspiring to study for a higher degree in a Western University as is evident from the career path taken by some of our alumni.
